Watching babies reach different milestones can fill our eyes with wonder — that a child so new to the world can adapt and learn different ways of functioning so quickly. Within a baby’s first year of life, they learn the tastes of different foods, the ability to laugh and recognize when something is funny, and how to babble and form bits of speech.

When children begin to communicate from babbling to words, the progression can sometimes seem to sky-rocket. At one point your infant was only giggling in your lap, and now they're trying to form sentences and make jokes with you. Babies begin reaching speech development milestones as early as 1 years old. To help navigate and keep an eye on your child’s growth, here is all you need to know about early language development and your child.

My first two kids were born overseas in 2008 and 2010, so we were super grateful to have Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. After their births, my husband would leave the hospital with our digital camera, go home, shower and upload a picture or two to announce the birth of, first, our son, then next, our daughter.

Easy, simple, fun. We loved the immediate response of love, support and everyone’s sheer joy.

Our family was grateful for social media, because it meant they found out quickly. There weren’t a million phone calls to make, they didn’t have to wait for baby announcements in the mail. They got to see a few pictures and be excited with us.

But apparently some people’s excitement gets a little out of control, breaking baby announcement protocol. Case in point, this post that recently popped up in my Facebook feed:

There are many reasons to love when March comes around. It’s the start of spring, a rejuvenating season for many, when the sun comes out for longer stretches and we can open the windows to air out the gloom of winter. Best of all, it’s before the heat of summer arrives, when we’re too uncomfortable to go outside or we’re sweating through the sheets at bedtime.

For many, springtime is their favorite season, and it’s a great time to bring a newborn into the world, too. The temperature gets a little warmer in March, which means walks in the stroller to get our newborn to sleep don’t require 20 minutes of bundling them up first. And we can layer our clothes, which helps for when we’re out and about and our postpartum hormones strike and either make us too hot or too cold.

Beyond the start of spring, March also comes with a few fun holidays (like St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras, which happened on March 1 this year), and it’s the month we honor Women’s History.

But the perks of a March birthday go beyond our postpartum phase, the weather outside, and enjoying foods that aren’t traditionally green. There are some statistical facts that come with being born in March that are fascinating.

If you’re expecting a baby in March or you’re a parent to one already, here are a few interesting facts about kids who celebrate their birthday in the third month of the year.

We know that any month a baby is born is a good month. But there are some perks to having a baby in some months that others don’t get to experience. A lot of that comes down to the comfort of the pregnant person (it is really hard to be pregnant in the summer), and then for a new parent, not being right in the dead of winter helps, too. And there are also some scientifically proven perks to being born in certain months rather than others.

Of course, these are generalizations. They’ll fit perfect for some babies and be a miss for others. But it still fun to read about what science is looking at and how the month we’re born in can help shape who we’re going to become.

If you’re expecting a baby in July, here are some fun perks (and a few that might make things a little challenging) about babies born during this month.
